Statcast says an Indians player hit a 505-foot home run, but you be the judge of that
The first series after the All-Star break did not go so well for the Indians. They lost to the Athletics on Sunday (OAK 7, CLE 3) and were swept in the three-game series in Oakland. The Indians still have a 1 1/2 game lead in the AL Central.
I’ve seen plenty of games in the Oakland Coliseum and there haven’t been many home runs hit way up there. It was a moonshot.
How far did Almonte hit that ball? According to Statcast, he crushed it 505 feet.
I am pro-Statcast and sabermetrics and all that, but I’m not sure I buy that being a 505-foot home run. The 362-foot sign is right below were the ball landed. Did Almonte really hit that ball 143 feet — almost half a football field — beyond the outfield wall? Hmm.
You are free to make your own judgment here. I love dingers as much as anyone. I find that 505-foot measurement — that would be the longest homer in baseball by 10 feet in 2017 — a little dubious.
